- PaintBrush (Free) – A simple paint program, like Paint for Windows. Mac only.
- Pixlr.com (Free) - Provides an express editing, as well as a more detailed app you can work with! Also available as iOS app.
- Fotor Photo Editor Online (Free) - A great app to use for photo editing that works via your browser, Android or iOS device.
- Google NIK Collection (Free) - High-end image editor plug-ins for Adobe Photoshop (required), Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for both Mac and Windows.
- IrfanView (Free) – A simple editor that allows you to resize images. Windows only.
- The Graphics Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) (Free) – A cross platform “Photoshop” like tool. Can be complicated for newbies.
- ON1 Effects 10 Free for Mac and Windows (Free)
- Turn Quotes into Images with Recite.com, Quozio.com, BeHappyMe, and/or VizzBuzz (Free)
Image and Video Special Effects
- Action Movie: This incredibly easy to use app assists in adding Hollywood FX to iPhone and iPad movies that you record. And you can share your creation as a video or animated GIF. (View example of video. View animated GIF.)
- FxGuru: Add horror, sci-fi, or action effects to a video you record. Available for Android, too. (View example)
- Super Power FX: Enable your students to add super power effects to their clips. You are able to “shoot fireballs from your hands, lasers from your eyes, or control the elements, teleport, and more!” (View example)
- Extreme Movie FX: Snap a picture, select the effect you want to apply to it, then save the still image to your Photo Gallery. From there, you can import the picture into a movie app like iMovie or Videorama. There are various effects you can apply, including shark attacks, UFO attacks, and more. Some effects are free, but others require in-app purchases. (View example)
- Videorama: Unlike other apps, this one allows you to combine photos and videos, add effects, adjust the speed of the video, and more. It’s less about the effects and more about video editing. Combine clips you create in other apps in Videorama. Easily add text, music, and transition effects to your video.(View example)
- Prisma: Although less about action adventure and more about art, this app allows you to apply nine+ different styles to videos, as well as photos. The astounding result resembles a work of art. (View example)

- PiktoChart - Users can create beautiful infographics with PiktoChart. With the free version, you are limited to 3 themes.
- Canva - Canva’s infographic maker includes hundreds of free design elements, allowing you to experiment with data visualization like a pro.
- Easel.ly - Easel.ly is a web tool where you can create visual graphics. Sign up and start creating using the user-friendly interface to custom build your infographic.
Many images, sounds, videos are shared under Creative Commons copyright. Here is a quick overview.
What is Creative Commons?
- Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization that enables the sharing and use of creativity and knowledge through free legal tools.

What is Public Domain?
- Works in the public domain are those whose copyrights have expired, have been forfeited, or are inapplicable.

How do you know if an image is copyrighted or not?
- Check the page you are on and see if there is a copyright or “terms of use” notice
- If the image is copyrighted, you should request permission from the publisher to use it. These terms will come up often as we discuss free photo sources. Read over the terms and conditions of each site you try so you know exactly when and what type of attribution is required.
